Do you experience chronic pain or limited mobility? Would you like a customized Clinical Somatic Education/Yoga Therapy practice created specifically for what you are experiencing in your body to help you manage, reduce or resolve discomfort?
Alana will meet with you for an initial 90 minute session during which time your specific health concerns will be discussed followed by a practice customized to your needs. Follow up sessions are 75 minutes in length.
Each private class will create calmness and ease for those experiencing chronic pain as a result of high levels of stress due to work, “life”, illness or injury. You will be provided with a detailed customized Clinical Somatic Education / Yoga Therapy program that you can practice from home.
In order to address the root cause of your discomfort, Alana will support you in exploring Clinical Somatic Education and Yoga Therapy to help you recognize where there may be muscle tension in your body as a result of repetitive activities, injury, trauma, surgery or ongoing stress. What was once an adaptive movement to help you through a stressful experience becomes “the new normal” when consistently repeated, which creates full body habituated reflexes. This, in turn, causes muscles to become stuck in contraction producing muscular tension, aches and pain.
Come explore just how easy it can be to release muscle tension rediscovering comfort and ease.
Please note that for the health and safety of all, she assures you that she has had four vaccines and she requires that you are double vaccinated for Covid-19 at least two weeks prior to attending an in person private session. You will both wear a masks for the duration of the session. Please continue to practice social distancing, stay home if you are sick or show signs of illness or someone close to you is COVID-19 positive.
Clinical Somatic Education / Yoga Therapy private sessions are available in the NW Calgary community of Tuscany of Mondays and Tuesdays from 11:00 am – 6:00 pm as well as at Reverence Stables Horsemanship Centre on Wednesdays from 11:00 am – 4:30 pm.
Gentle Somatic Movement Education for Mobility & Pain Care Group Classes – In Person
“Life’s blessings come when you least expect them. Practicing Somatic yoga with Alana has been one for me. I was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus in my early 20’s and have spent decades learning to live and work around chronic joint and muscle pain. Rest, various pain medications and other forms of yoga are some of the things that I have used to keep me mobile and functioning over the years. My life is a balancing act between my health and my life as an artist and farmer.Living across the country meant that attending practice with Alana was not an option, my hope was that on one of our visits west that I might be able to schedule a private session. The arrival of the pandemic, and the switch to virtual classes changed all that.
When I started the practice last year I was at the lowest point in decades. My balance was so bad I couldn’t go up or down the stairs without having a hand on each wall. My working day had to be carefully divided into smaller segments of time and balanced with rest periods.
Practicing Somatics with Alana changed all that. I no longer need to balance on the walls and plan each foot step on the stairs, my strength is returning, and my use of pain medication is less than half of what it was. When discomfort does happen, I no longer shove it to the back of my mind and push on. I have the tools to know where it is originating and what I have to do to fix the problem quicky and easily. Somatic Movement is neuromuscular movement re-education or, in other words, it retrains your brain to communicate to your muscles how to safely contract, lengthen and relax in a more effective and efficient way to improve movement and reduce or eliminate chronic muscle pain.

This gentle, safe and effective mindful movement practice invites you to get curious as you deepen your internal awareness of where you are holding muscle tension that is contributing to your limited mobility and tight and tired muscles.
You will learn how to release muscle tension and restore healthy movement patterns which, in turn, will create improved coordination, balance and posture to provide you with more choice and variation in the activities you would love to participate in.
It’s this easy – you mindfully and gently move into muscle tension, slowly and deliberately lengthen out of the tension and then completely relax. When you focus your awareness on each of these three aspects, which together are called a pandiculation, you create a more balanced resting state.
Among other health conditions, this practice is for you if you find yourself struggling with:
- Shoulder immobility
- Hip or knee pain
- Back pain
- Neck pain
